Facebook question please help me out here 10 quick points?

A wile back I send a friend request to someone, now I do not see them on my friends list. But over the last 2 weeks I noiced that can see when they are friends with new people. I do not understand that because before (for almost 3 months I saw nothing) and I know they are always on facebook. How is this possible
