Do Republicans expect to be taken seriously?

Why is the GOP focusing on people who are better suited for circus side shows than as leaders of the free world? Shouldn't Republicans be putting the spotlight on candidates that will actually give Obama a run for his money? Why do they want to make it so easy for him to be reelected?
