Entering US with 4 months left on US passport?

I moved to the UK a wile back and have 4 months left on my US passport. it will take 7-18 months to get my British passport. I know everyone can apply for a passport abroad when it expires. my question is can can a US citizen enter The US (for a holiday) and return to the UK with less then 6 months till the passport expires?
